Although witchcraft is the number one spiritual enemy of humanity, many people, including Christians do not really know what witchcraft is. As a result, there are a lot of people, including Christians, who are either witches or bewitched. Many professing Christians come under the control of witchcraft while thinking they are submitting to God’s authority and anointing of the Holy Spirit.
What is witchcraft?
Let me give you what I believe is the right definition of witchcraft. Witchcraft is the corrupted or perverted anointing of Lucifer which he uses to advance his rebellion as a fallen angel. It is the supernatural power that he possesses and shares with humans who are under his dominion and serve him.
Through this power or Lucifer’s perverted anointing, servants of the devil and Charismatic witches are able to perform supernatural acts. Just as anointed servants of God are able to perform supernatural acts by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, servants of the devil can also perform supernatural acts by the power of witchcraft. The only difference between the two supernatural acts is their source. One is from the Holy Spirit and the other is from the devil.
“..And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.” Exodus 7:10-12
When Jesus was warning His disciples and showing them the signs and events that will take place at the end of the age or when His second coming draws near, He said:
“For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand.” Matthew 24:24 (Emphasis added)
Notice that Jesus acknowledged and warned that false christs and false prophets will have the ability to show or perform great signs and wonders. In other words, false christs and false prophets possess the supernatural power that enable them to perform great signs and wonders.
This should open our eyes to the fact that we cannot authenticate God’s presence or the credibility of a man of God by the presence of signs and wonders or the display of the supernatural. We must judge all the super–natural displays with the word. In fact, authenticating God’s presence by observing supernatural manifestations is what will cause many professing Christians to be deceived. Jesus said that false christs and false prophets will show great signs and wonders, primarily, to deceive those they can deceive and this includes the elect.
There are main two branches of supernatural abilities that man can possess and display through the power of witchcraft. They are: supernatural power and supernatural knowledge. The spirit of witchcraft can enable a natural man to possess supernatural power and super–natural knowledge just as the anointing of the Holy Spirit can enable natural men to have supernatural power and supernatural knowledge.
The Power branch of witchcraft is what enables witches, false prophets and other servants of the devil to perform miracles, while the supernatural knowledge branch enables them to tap into the power of divination. Through divination, they are able to access information super-naturally and prophesy.
Throughout the Bible, we find these two forms of power in conflict with God’s power. We have already seen how Moses and Aaron went into contest regarding the display of power with the servants of Pharaoh. The other classic example when the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit came into direct confrontation with the power of witchcraft is when Philip went to preach Christ in the city of Samaria. When he arrived in Samaria, he found that people, in the city, were already familiar with the display of supernatural power. Simon the sorcerer had established himself, in that city of Samaria, as a man with the great power of God.
Simon displayed so much supernatural power that the whole city came under his control. Through the power of witchcraft, he bewitched the whole city.
“But there was a certain man, called Simon, which before time in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.” Acts 8:9-11 (KJV) (Emphasis added)
There are two important things we have to observe from what happened in the city of Samaria. The first is that one man operating in the supernatural power of witchcraft bewitched the whole city and brought it under his control. The second is that God liberated the whole city from the bondage of bewitchment, by one man who was anointed with His power.
What happened to the city of Samaria will happen to many cities and even nations as we approach the coming of Christ. There will be cities and nations that will come under the control of false prophets, using the power of witchcraft. People will see the supernatural power that they will display and follow them, thinking they are following true servants of God. On the other hand, cities and nations where God will find men and women who are submitted to Him; those who He can anoint with His power, will be preserved from bewitchment by false prophets.
The question is, how do you tell the difference between miracles performed by the power of witchcraft and the anointing? To be continued.
